Glass transition temperature changes of melt-blended polymer nanocomposites containing finely dispersed ZnO quantum dots

چکیده
We report the linear increase in the glass transition temperature, Tg, with nanofiller weight content. ZnO quantum dots dispersed by melt-blending in a poly(methyl methacrylate) host were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis showing that the Tg of the system is described by a power law of the interparticle distance, hp, where the percolation exponent, n, was 0.55 to 0.64. Our analysis demonstrates that the characteristic length of the polymer in PNCs is in the range of 0.41–0.90 nm. Our results suggest that polymer nanocomposites can be described by the quantitative models of polymer thin films.

The nanocomposites of ethylene octene copolymer (Engage ) with an organically modified (dimethyldioctadecyl quaternary ammonium chloride) montmorillonite (M-MMT) clay were synthesized by using a solution intercalation technique. The intercalation of M-MMT layers for M-MMT loading of 2.5–7.5% was verified by the shift of X-ray diffraction peak to a lower angle, showing change in basal d-spacing ...

متن کاملDisruption of self-assembly and altered mechanical behavior in polyurethane/zinc oxide nanocomposites
The addition of less than 1 vol%, 33 nm zinc oxide nanoparticles into a polyurethane matrix resulted in approximately 40% decrease in the Young’s modulus, 80% decrease in strain at fracture, and 50% decrease in the storage modulus, but at the same time resulted in an w11 8C increase in the glass transition temperature of the polymer. These results appear to contradict the general principle obse...
